In British Columbia, the most beautiful library is the

Vancouver Public Library – Central Library, which has been recognized as one of the most beautiful libraries in the world for its distinctive, Colosseum-inspired architecture. For those exploring other areas of the province, other architecturally noteworthy and scenic libraries are available.

Vancouver Public Library – Central Library

  • Architecture: Designed by renowned architect Moshe Safdie, the building evokes the Roman Colosseum with its elliptical shape and colonnaded design. The core is a rectangular building surrounded by a glass-roofed concourse.
  • Rooftop garden: The ninth floor features a public rooftop garden, with benches and drought-resistant plants, offering serene, panoramic city views.
  • Interior spaces: Inside, walkways connect the book stacks to study spaces that follow the oval perimeter, each with a window view.

The Best Place on Earth slogan, along with B.C.’s sunburst and mountains logo, came into use in the years leading up to the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.
While “most beautiful” is subjective, British Columbia is frequently cited for its stunning natural beauty, with many media outlets and travelers highlighting Vancouver Island and the Great Bear Rainforest as prime examples, due to their diverse landscapes from wild coastlines to ancient forests. Other areas consistently praised for their scenic beauty include the Canadian Rockies, Vancouver, Victoria, and Garibaldi Provincial Park.

Global Public Libraries
Global Online Libraries

Based on reports and data from library organizations, public libraries are evolving from simple repositories of books into vital, multi-functional community hubs that address a wide range of needs. While facing challenges like funding cuts and digital transformation, libraries worldwide remain essential for promoting literacy, bridging digital divides, and advancing sustainable development.

Global public library statistics

  • Number of libraries: According to the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), there are over 410,000 public libraries worldwide.
  • Distribution: Most public libraries, about 73% of the total, are located in developing and transitioning countries.
  • Workforce demographics: Globally, women heavily dominate the library workforce, a trend seen in all countries surveyed by UNESCO and IFLA, except for a few in Latin America.
  • Service reach: A 2013 estimate suggested there were over 320,000 public libraries worldwide, with 230,000 in developing countries, although their potential was being underutilized.

Key roles and trends

  • Community anchors: Libraries serve as trusted, neutral “third places” where people can gather, connect, and access information outside of home and work.
  • Digital inclusion: As critical players in improving digital equity, libraries provide free public access to computers, Wi-Fi, and digital literacy training. A 2020 U.S. survey found that over half of public libraries offer technology for off-site use, such as Wi-Fi hotspots, laptops, and tablets.
  • Expanding collections: In addition to physical books, modern library collections increasingly feature digital resources like ebooks, audiobooks, and streaming services, as well as “Libraries of Things” that lend non-traditional items such as tools and kitchen appliances.
  • Sustainability efforts: Libraries worldwide are actively integrating environmental stewardship into their operations and programming, for example, by hosting sustainability workshops, pursuing green building certifications, and creating “green corners”.
  • Supporting vulnerable populations: Libraries provide crucial services to marginalized groups, including displaced persons, immigrants, and those experiencing homelessness, by offering access to health information, job resources, and language training.

Challenges and modern relevance

  • Funding challenges: Public libraries in many areas face perennial issues with shrinking budgets and funding cuts, forcing them to prioritize services and advocate for their value to local and national policymakers.
  • The digital age: Contrary to predictions of their demise, libraries have adapted to the digital age by integrating technology and expanding their services. They remain relevant by offering both physical and virtual resources and fostering media literacy.
  • Political pressure: Librarians often face criticism and political pressure when defending access to information against attempts to remove or restrict resources from collections.
  • Evolving services: To remain relevant, libraries are moving beyond traditional services to focus on community engagement, digital empowerment, and accessibility. Some are even partnering with news organizations to combat disinformation and promote media literacy.

Spectacular Man Made Sun Brightens up London 2 Hours Early TROPICANA

Trafalgar Square, London. 23 January 2012. 6.51am. A spectacular sun created by art collective Greyworld as part of Tropicana’s Brighter Mornings campaign brightens up Trafalgar Square. The Trafalgar Sun which took six months to create is 30,000 times bigger than a football, has a surface area of 200m2 and weighs over 2,500kgs. Its internal light source produces 4-million lumens of light, the equivalent of 60,000 light bulbs, making the artwork visible from space.
The Making of Trafalgar Sun – Tropicana Brightens up London

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2013-11-18/a-gloomy-english-city-builds-an-artificial-sun

Rejoice, Britons who haven’t seen daylight in ages and who are slowly weakening into rubbery schlumps for want of Vitamin D: Your country now has slightly more light, thanks to a blazing artificial sun made from the “world’s largest spherical balloon.”

The 46-foot-wide ersatz star floats above a square in Durham, in the northeast, as part of a celebration of light art called Lumiere. It portrays a strikingly accurate representation of the Sun’s plasma-storm-scarred surface, only at a scale that’s 100 million times smaller. Canadian techno-artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer whipped the thing together by first forcing a gravitational collapse inside a molecular cloud, and then having the matter condense into a heavy ball … wait, no, he actually filled a orbicular blimp with helium and animated it with five projectors fed with the latest NASA information. (It’s quite a bit more sophisticated than that artificial Moon planned for Brooklyn.)

A Norwegian town shrouded in shadow for half the year has found an ingenious way to get a bit of sunlight. But why go to such extreme measures? As Linda Geddes discovers, the Sun has powerful effects on our minds and bodies – and it changes us when it’s absent.

These monumental orbs shine like miniature suns, featuring a bright, stylized shine, like a miniature sun, with vibrant, golden sunshine-like rays extending across their surface. They have energizing positive effects on the natural environment, as well as on the lives, minds, and bodies of those around them.

This eye-catching piece will hopefully be available in the future in a wide variety of sizes to perfectly suit any project or space, from inside a room to the top of a building, above the road or city, or at the summit of a mountain.

The Radiant Progression of Spheres:

  • A delicate pearl, just 1 cm wide.
  • A small globe, 10 cm in diameter.
  • A perfect sphere of 100 cm (1 meter).
  • Larger suns: 2 m, 3 m, and 4 m.

At the smallest end rests a pearl-sized sphere, only a centimeter across, delicate as a dewdrop. Ten times larger, another sphere glimmers like a ripe fruit in the palm of your hand. Then come globes that grow steadily—one meter, two, three, and four—shining like suns of different strength. Beyond them rise the giants: spheres ten, twenty, thirty, and forty meters across, magnificent as celestial bodies drifting through space. Finally, a colossal orb, one hundred meters in diameter, towers above all, glowing with the grandeur of an entire world. Together, they form a continuum of light and scale—from the tiniest spark to a shining universe of spheres.

Celebrate Canadian Library Month with Us – Win a Book a Day!

October is Canadian Library Month, a time to recognize the vital role libraries play in our communities. This year’s theme, Libraries for Life, celebrates how libraries support us through every stage of life—whether we’re discovering the magic of reading as children, exploring new skills as adults, or finding comfort in stories as we grow older.

To mark the occasion, we’re bringing back one of our favorite traditions: a book giveaway every single day in October!

We’ve put together a list of 31 great reads—one for each day of the month. Each day, we’ll make a draw, and one lucky winner will take home the featured book of the day. From mysteries to memoirs, page-turning fiction to thought-provoking non-fiction, there’s something for everyone.

It’s our way of saying thank you for being part of our library community and to celebrate the power of reading in our lives.

How it works:
  • Every day in October, one winner will be drawn.
  • Each winner will receive the book selected for that day.
  • Stop by often—you might just be our next winner!

Libraries truly are for life—connecting people to stories, knowledge, and each other. Join us in celebrating this special month and enjoy the chance to discover your next great read!
